Austin's climate is close to a worst-case test for paint. Here's what coating changes.
Ceramic coating gets sold everywhere as a must-have, which makes it reasonable to ask whether it's actually worth it or just an upsell. In Austin specifically, the honest answer leans toward yes — but it depends on the car, how it's used, and what you're comparing it against.
Ceramic coating is a hard, hydrophobic layer bonded to the clear coat that makes water bead and roll off instead of sitting and drying. That matters more here than in milder climates for two reasons: Austin tap water runs around 250 PPM of dissolved minerals (versus near 0 for a proper RO/DI rinse), so water that sits and dries on bare paint leaves mineral spotting fast — and Central Texas summer sun bakes those minerals in within minutes on a hot hood. A coated surface sheds that water before it has the chance to dry and etch.
It does: add a slick, hydrophobic layer that makes washes faster and easier, add UV and chemical resistance that slows down oxidation and fading, and add a genuine layer of scratch resistance against light swirling from washing.
It doesn't: make paint scratch-proof against rock chips or keying, remove existing swirls or defects on its own (that's what the paint correction underneath it is for), or eliminate the need to wash the car — it just makes each wash more effective and each wash interval more forgiving.

Worth it: daily drivers that live outside in Austin sun, anyone who's tired of water spots after every rain or sprinkler cycle, cars headed for resale where paint condition affects value, and any car whose owner wants to stretch the time between full details.
Skip it, for now: a car with heavy existing paint damage that needs correction budgeted on its own first, or a car you're planning to sell within the next few months, where the cost may not be recovered in resale value.

It dramatically reduces them by making water bead and run off before it dries, but the most complete answer is combining it with a 0 PPM RO/DI rinse at every wash, so there's nothing dissolved in the water to spot in the first place.
We don't recommend it — coating over existing swirls and scratches seals them in rather than fixing them. Both of our coating packages start with the correction step for that reason.
