Convict Hill takes its name from a 19th-century limestone quarry that operated using convict labor — stone quarried here is reported to have gone into the Texas Capitol building. The quarry site is now preserved as Convict Hill Quarry Park, with playgrounds and a moderate, shaded hiking trail, giving the surrounding streets a distinctive bit of local history most Oak Hill neighborhoods don't have.
Zoned schools here vary by address (Bowie High, Austin High, Small Middle, or Oak Hill Elementary depending on exactly where you are), and the quarry park's shaded trail means a bit more leaf litter tracked in on streets closest to the park entrance.
