Deep Eddy takes its name from the historic Deep Eddy Pool — the oldest swimming pool in Texas, originating in 1902 as the Johnson siblings' "Deep Eddy Bathing Beach" on the Colorado River. The concrete pool was built in 1916, the City of Austin bought it in 1935, and a WPA-era limestone bathhouse went up after a 1935 flood, reopening in 1936; the pool was restored between 2002 and 2007 with a zero-depth beach entry added in 2012, and it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's a roughly 600,000-gallon, unchlorinated, spring-fed pool that stays 68-75°F year-round. The immediate neighborhood is small homes near Lake Austin Boulevard and Deep Eddy Avenue, walkable to the pool and to the Deep Eddy Cabaret, the bar made famous in Jimmie Dale Gilmore's "Deep Eddy Blues."
Being this close to a spring-fed pool and the river means a bit more humidity in the air than drier parts of Tarrytown, and the neighborhood's small, older homes mean tighter driveways and more street parking. Neither is a complication for us — we work with Deep Eddy's layout the way we do any older, walkable Austin neighborhood.
